Chitkara University, Punjab, initiated an innovative endeavor to transform the teaching of fundamental mathematics. Under this initiative, the 4th Skill Enhancement program occurred from September 12th to September 14th, 2023, as part of the Project titled “Awareness and Training Program for Teachers on Teaching Mathematics through Origami”, catalyzed by the National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC), Department of Science and Technology (DST) Govt. of India, New Delhi. The program introduced educators to the
captivating realm of origami. The workshop’s commencement featured esteemed guests, including Sh. V. Sivashankara Sastry, India’s eminent origami expert in mathematics and science communication, alongside Dr. S.N.Panda (Executive-Director Research), Dr. Nitin Saluja (Associate-Director Research) and Dr. Ashutosh Mishra (Dean CSMC), Dr. Kalpna Guleria (Associate Professor and Principal Investigator Project) who played pivotal roles in the project.
The workshop was enthralling, and the educators actively participated in a sequence of informative sessions facilitated by Sh. V. Sivashankara Sastry. The workshop provided insights into using origami as a powerful tool to revolutionize educational techniques, emphasizing its capacity to augment conceptualization and analytical abilities. The hands-on segments skillfully guided teachers through fundamental origami techniques, vividly demonstrating geometric shapes, fractions, and symmetry—integral elements of the mathematics curriculum. The workshop concluded with a closing ceremony during which Sh. V. Sivashankara Sastry, Dr. S.N. Panda, Dr. Ashutosh Mishra, and Dr. Kalpna Guleria awarded commendations to the victors of the mathematics origami model-making competition. Over 50 school teachers participated and expressed admiration for Chitkara University’s endeavors and NCSTC, DST’s initiative to benefit the academic community.
