Shaping the Future of Mathematics Education through Innovative and Insightful Mathematical Origami Modeling

Continuing its commitment to fostering creative and effective teaching practices, Chitkara University, Punjab, conducted the 5th Skill development program under the Project “Awareness and Training Program for Teachers on Teaching Mathematics through Origami” from 20th September to 22nd September 2023. The project is catalyzed by the National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC), Department of Science and Technology (DST) Govt. of India, New Delhi. The program commenced with the inauguration ceremony led by Sh. V. Sivashankar Sastry (India’s eminent Origamist Maths and Science Communicator),  Dr. S. N. Panda (Executive Director – Research Chitkara University, Punjab), Dr. Nitin Saluja (Associate-Director Research) and Dr. Ashutosh Mishra (Dean CSMC), Dr. Kalpna Guleria (Associate Professor and Principal Investigator Project). Dr. Kalpna Guleria elucidated that the primary goal of the NCSTC and DST project is to elevate teachers’ skill sets, making the learning of mathematics through origami models an enjoyable experience for students.

Sh. V. Sivashankar Sastry, played a pivotal role as the resource person in this project. During the FDP, various demonstrations were provided about mathematical formulas, comprehension, and characterization of complex mathematical shapes through origami. Teachers were provided with hands-on experience in building origami models. Mrs. Jasbir Kaur (Block Education Officer Derabassi) and Mr. Jatin Miglani (Block Education Officer Kharar) visited and admired the efforts made by Chitkara University, Punjab to benefit academia.  During the valedictory session, Dr. S. N. Panda and Dr. Kalpna Guleria honored the resource person, Sh. V. Sivashankar Sastry and commended the participants’ efforts in showcasing their mathematical origami modeling skills. More than 70 participants from various schools participated in this program.

The 5th Skill Development program marked the successful completion of the project, and more than 270  teachers were trained under this project, emphasizing the potential of innovative methodologies to revolutionize education, and it serves as an inspiring example for enhancing the quality of teaching and learning.
