A method and a system are provided for controlling operation of a switch in anetwork. In an embodiment, the method comprises receiving a set of instructionsat a switch. The set of instructions pertain to selection of one of an operation of aplurality of operations of the switch. The plurality of operations is indicative ofany or a combination of a firewall operation, a load balancer operation, and an10 intrusion detection operation. Further, the operation of the switch is adjusted toperform one of the selected operations for routing of a plurality of data packetsfrom a source location to a destination location in the network.
